FeedTamer checks the information YouTube provides on the home feed, search, the sidebar, the player's own suggestions and autoplay, and hides the videos that match your rules. It runs in desktop browsers compatible with the Chrome Web Store. YouTube Premium is not required.
The rules you can use
- Words. A word hides every title that contains it. Free.
- Channels. An @handle or a channel link hides that channel's videos. Free. See how to hide videos by channel.
- Shorts. Hide Shorts is on by default. Free. See how to block Shorts.
- Subjects. Sixteen ready-made subjects, among them politics, gambling, drama and graphic violence, turn on with one tap. Subscription.
- Sections and recommendations. Switches hide mixes, news shelves, playables and other sections, plus home page recommendations, related videos next to the player and suggestions when a video ends. Subscription.
- Show rules and Allow mode. A Show rule keeps a channel visible even when a section or subject would hide it. Allow mode hides every video that no Show rule keeps. Subscription.
- Video filters. Live, duration and watched-video filters, and the Shouty titles filter. Subscription.
Start with one rule
- Install FeedTamer in a compatible desktop browser. Use the official Chrome Web Store listing. No account or card is required.
- Open Settings. Click the FeedTamer icon on the toolbar. All rule editing happens there.
- Add a word or a channel. Type a word, or paste an @handle or a channel link, into the Hide a word or channel box and select Hide.
- Check the count. Each saved rule shows how many videos it has hidden, so you can see which rules are doing the work.
Feed sections and recommendations
Three switches cover recommendation surfaces: the recommendation grid on the home page, the up-next column beside the video you are watching, and the suggestions over the player when a video ends. Search and subscriptions are untouched.
Five section switches hide Mixes, Playlists, Community posts, Breaking news shelves and Games.
Video filters in detail
- Live streams. Hide live streams hides videos that carry YouTube's live badge.
- Video length. Videos shorter than the number of seconds you set are hidden. 0 shows every length, and a video whose length cannot be read stays visible.
- Watched videos. A video is hidden once the share you have watched reaches the percentage you set. A video with no progress bar is never hidden by this filter.
- Repeated videos. When YouTube lists the same video twice in one feed, the first copy stays and the repeat is hidden.
- Limit per channel. At most the number of videos you set from one channel stay on a page, the first ones shown. 0 means no limit.
- Shouty titles. Hide titles that shout checks the share of letters in capitals, repeated punctuation such as !! or ?!, and phrases you add. Titles with fewer than 8 letters are never judged on capitals. The filter reads writing style and does not check whether a claim is true.
- Missing information. Hide videos with missing information hides a card FeedTamer cannot read. Allow mode always hides unreadable cards.
The video filters come with the subscription or the trial.
What stays in your browser
Filtering happens in your browser. Your YouTube feed and watch activity are not uploaded to FeedTamer. Trial and subscription checks connect to FeedTamer services. See the privacy policy.
Plans
Word and channel hiding and Hide Shorts are free with no time limit. Subjects and the rest come with a subscription. New installs can start a free trial of every filtering feature, with no account or card. See the plans.
What a filter cannot do
- It depends on what the page shows. A word rule cannot identify a subject the title never mentions.
- It does not filter the YouTube phone or TV apps. This installation is for desktop browsers compatible with Chrome Web Store.
- It is not a parental-control security boundary. A person can disable or remove the extension.
- YouTube changes can affect coverage. Check the result with your own rules.
